Amid mounting concern about the scale of plastic pollution and against the backdrop of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York, Minderoo Foundation announced an expansion of CDP’s global environmental disclosure system in collaboration with CDP, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and The Pew Charitable Trusts. This addition will include plastics-related questions and metrics in CDP’s annual disclosure questionnaires, commencing with a pilot in 2023.

Monica Medina, Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs of the United States, spoke at the launch and described the development as an incredible opportunity to connect the outputs from this process to a global agreement, national actions, and stakeholder commitments. Medina said, “Transparency is paramount. It’s difficult to get a full sense of how much plastic is produced and how much ends up as pollution on our land and in our ocean. If we can start to make that picture clearer, we can have a better sense of how to steer our efforts to reduce plastic pollution.”

Many businesses still have limited awareness of how they contribute to plastic pollution and their exposure to the commercial, regulatory, and reputational concerns associated with this issue – something Minderoo Foundation is determined to address.

Chair and co-founder Andrew Forrest said, “We cannot fix a plastic pollution problem we do not wholly understand or see. Last year, we made huge progress in identifying who is financing the single-use plastic industry – through the Plastic Waste Makers Index. But there is still so much to uncover. We urgently need this precise information to reward the businesses truly trying to end plastic pollution and call out businesses engaged in greenwashing. This will give policymakers the visibility they need to stop this problem once and for all.”

The full details of CDP’s first year of plastics disclosure, including which companies will be requested to disclose initially, will be released in early 2023, before the April launch of the disclosure platform.
