WHY WE CARE

Marine fisheries provide millions of people with livelihoods, food security, and nutrition

Illicit activities at sea — including overfishing — continue to threaten the health of fish populations and the people dependent on them.

Through our Sustainable Fisheries Program, we envision a future where global fisheries are sustainable, worker rights are respected, and coastal communities thrive.

We work at multiple geographic levels: globally on issues that have a significant impact on fisheries and biodiversity; regionally; and at national level. Most of our work is focused on the Indo-Pacific Region, where we support countries with their sustainable fisheries and marine conservation objectives.

OUR WORK

In collaboration with partners, we’re working to eliminate overfishing through:

Improving Australia’s seafood import controls

More than half of the seafood sold in Australia is imported, but it doesn’t have to meet the same sustainability and ethical rules as local seafood. Australians deserve the best seafood that is sustainable and ethical.
