Changing plastic for good
Minderoo Foundation is driving a global transition to safe and sustainable materials that replace and improve plastic. It complements our world-leading scientific research into the harms fossil-fuel derived plastics have on human health and the environment.
Changing plastic for good
We invest in early and growth-stage businesses that bring safer solutions to market, support scientific research to overcome technical barriers in promising new materials, and generate data-driven insights to guide innovation and policy.
Our work addresses root causes—such as high costs, limited scalability, and toxic chemical use—that prevent sustainable materials from competing with conventional plastics to enable a safer and more sustainable future for all.
What are Sustainable Materials?
Sustainable materials are designed with human and environmental safety in mind, avoiding harmful chemical additives and enabling responsible end-of-life pathways, whether through true circularity or safe biodegradation.
This includes:
- Bio-based and biodegradable plastics, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), which are produced by microbes and can safely biodegrade in natural environments;
- Non-plastic substitutes, like moulded fibre packaging or advanced paper-based packaging that can replace conventional plastics in key applications;
- Technologies that improve the safety or circularity of existing materials, like replacing hazardous additives with safer alternatives or enhancing recyclability with better design.
Why do we need Sustainable Materials?
Plastics made with fossil fuels are leaching chemicals that increase rates of cancer, reduce fertility, lower IQ, and much more.
If we continue using these synthetic materials, we commit future generations to the same harm.
We can change our future for good by supporting the development of sustainable materials that don’t harm our bodies or the environment.
Supporting these new technologies will help them become commercially viable and scalable, setting up a new wave of materials that we and future generations can use safely.
What’s stopping the change?
Scalability: While promising alternatives to plastic are emerging (e.g., bioplastics, PHAs), many are not yet scalable or cost-competitive with conventional plastics.
Performance Limitations: Many sustainable materials don’t yet match the performance of plastics in certain applications, such as durability, heat resistance, or flexibility.
End-of-Life Solutions: While some materials are biodegradable, the lack of proper waste management infrastructure for these materials can lead to environmental problems.
Chemical Safety: Some "green" alternatives, like bioplastics, contain harmful additives or chemicals, raising concerns about long-term environmental impact and human health risks.
Material Diversity: There is a lack of diverse, low-impact alternatives that can replace plastics across all industries, particularly in complex products like electronics, packaging, and textiles.
Consumer Awareness & Acceptance: Despite innovations, many consumers are not aware of sustainable materials or may not fully trust their performance or environmental claims.
Changing plastic for good
Minderoo is focused on four areas to help the sector developing sustainable materials thrive:
Innovation
Supporting projects and partners that clear technology roadblocks that currently prevent the scaling or market adoption of sustainable alternatives.
Investment
Boosting sector funding through supporting early and growth stage businesses, using our Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) and a network of co-investors and strategic partners.
Data & Insights
Raising awareness of the sector through publications and partner-led research that also fills knowledge gaps and helps attract capital to accelerate development.
Plastics and Human Health
Minderoo is advocating for stronger efforts to regulate plastics, including the ongoing negotiation of the Global Plastics Treaty, and supporting world-leading research into he effects of plastics on human health.
Work with Minderoo Foundation
We back early-stage companies through Minderoo’s SIF that are developing upstream solutions to replace conventional plastics in areas where they pose risks to human health or the environment.
If you're building the future of safe and sustainable materials, we want to hear from you.
Investment sectors of interest:
- Non-plastic substitutes
- Bio-based & biodegradable polymers
- Safe additives and fillers
- Biorefineries
- Enabling technologies (e.g. safe barrier coatings for paper)
Please note: Our funding is focused exclusively on upstream solutions that enable the development and scale-up of safe and sustainable material alternatives, rather than downstream solutions and projects for recycling, waste management, or end-of-life treatment of conventional plastics.
