Minderoo commits US$5 million to catalyse the transition from fossil fuel plastic

Minderoo Foundation has committed US$5 million to the United Nations-led Plastics Transition Investment Facility (PTIF), becoming the first private donor to back the landmark global initiative to accelerate solutions to the plastic crisis.

Established by the United Nations Environment Programme, the UN Capital Development Fund and the International Finance Corporation, the PTIF will mobilise public and private capital at scale to significantly reduce the negative impacts plastic has on human and planetary health. Its key differentiator is a focus across the entire plastic life cycle including the scaling of upstream solutions that mitigate environmental and human health impacts caused by plastics and toxic plastic chemicals.

The facility aims to unlock more than US$1 billion in investment through an innovative blended finance approach, leveraging up to US$150 million in donor capital to de-risk investments and attract significantly larger flows of commercial finance.

Dr Andrew Forrest AO said solving the plastic crisis will require the courage to back promising solutions.

“The plastic crisis is one of the defining environmental and human health challenges of our time. We will not solve it with business as usual,” Dr Forrest said.

“The transition from fossil fuel derived plastics is already underway. Minderoo is backing the Plastics Transition Investment Facility because solutions across industries, supply chains and geographies can’t wait.”

“By investing in the facility we’re helping unlock the funding needed to bring safer materials, new technologies and transformative solutions to market faster. This is about using philanthropic capital as a catalyst for change and proving that it can be a powerful force in ending plastic pollution.”

Despite growing awareness of the environmental and human health impacts of plastic, the global transition remains chronically underfunded.

Current capital flows are more than US$900 billion short of the estimated annual investment required to meet global 2040 targets for a sustainable plastic transition.

While more than 85 per cent of existing investments are directed toward downstream waste management solutions, upstream and midstream interventions, including sustainable material innovation, circular product design, and systems change, remain critically underserved.

“Minderoo’s commitment gives the Plastics Transition Investment Facility a strong start and shows the catalytic role philanthropy plays in taking early risk and helping mobilize larger pools of capital to support job creation and more circular economies,” said Pradeep Kurukulasuriya, Executive Secretary of the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).

“For UNCDF, the plastics transition is both an environmental necessity and an economic opportunity. We hope Minderoo’s leadership encourages more partners to join the coalition.”

Minderoo CEO, John Hartman, said the US$5 million commitment reflected the foundation’s drive to address the plastic crisis through strategic philanthropy and market-based solutions.

“The scale of the plastic crisis demands a new approach to finance and as negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty continue, the Plastic Transition Investment Facility could help demonstrate what an effective multilateral financing mechanism might look like in practice,” Mr Hartman said.

“By blending public, private and philanthropic capital, PTIF is designed to help mobilise investment into the systems, materials, products and business models needed to reduce the negative effects plastics have on human and planetary health. It would not determine the treaty outcome, but it could provide a practical proof point for how future treaty financing could support implementation at scale.”

As PTIF’s first private donor, Minderoo will help build the momentum needed to attract further capital and will contribute to shaping PTIF’s investment strategy, with a particular focus on strengthening support for upstream solutions that can prevent plastic harms before it occurs and mitigate the negative impacts of plastics on human health.

PTIF is tailored to finance solutions across the full life cycle, from source reduction and safer materials, to circular products, reuse, recycling, waste management and tackling legacy plastics. By taking this end-to-end approach, it addresses a major gap in current finance and policy efforts, which too often concentrate on downstream solutions while overlooking the upstream and midstream interventions needed to drive systemic change.

The investment complements Minderoo’s approach to tackling the plastics crisis by investing in both the solutions and the science.

Through strategic investments in research and development, innovative businesses and emerging technologies, Minderoo is helping accelerate the commercial scale-up of safer, more sustainable alternatives to problematic plastics.
